Why does it smear?!

Question: I was reading my Motor Trend magazine this morning (the newest one which I just bought two days ago) when I accidentally touched some of the text and it smeared all over a small area of the page! This has got me very confused, since I had always thought that glossy magazine pages were set and could not be smeared. So what in the heck's going on here? Fortunately, I got none on my hand, but it did smear, which I thought was impossible! Good thing I'm not a collector, since that would decrease the value of the magazine! You know what the sucky part is? I'll never know what it says on the second paragraph of page 22. Oh well...

If you had something greasy or oily on your fingers, or if something oily drips onto the page, that usually causes the ink on glossy paper to smear.

Many mags use a clay based glossy paper which can smear even with normal body oils or if wet. It makes the type standout, but once smaeared you can and apparently did lose your text.

You have sweaty hands brother, are you a nervous person?
