Is Highlights a good magazine for a 5 year old?!

Question: I would like to give a magazine subscription to my friends 5 year old daughter. Is Highlights good for her? What other children's magazines do you suggest?

yeah it's educational and good for a 5 year old. Also try Nick Jr.

Definitely!

It's good. I subscribed in the first and second grade. It's something positive and pleasant.... a nice media antidote, in that sense, for little ones.

It's a good mag kidd go for it

I suggest Nickolodian Jr. magazine. It's a fun magazine for children with tons of activities.

Yes, it is. National Geographic World is good, too. Weekly Reader, etc.

I gave all of my 7 kids hylights it's the best. I'm now giving my grand babies Hylights.oh incidently shhh! i use hylights too it's so much fun!.

That is good. I use Highlights for all my kids and I still do.

Definitely, as a child i grew up on the magazine and i turned out great. Know that i think about it i kind of miss it

heck yes, highlights rocked when i was 5... i still remember Goofus and Galant... did i spell that right world? Galant? "Goofus throws snowballs at other people, Galant throws snowballs at trees... haha" It worked for me... i graduated high school with honors and went on to graduate college... get that kid reading yo... i also remember the Sweet Pickles series... not a magazine, but a book series for kids.... whoa, that brings me back, thanks... get her highlights, she will always remember it.

I'm not crazy about it. Try cricket or spider, my 5 year old loves them more.

Highlights is good. There is also a series of magazines by one publisher that has magazines for successive ages 5 into adolescence—I just can't remember which mag is for which age but google search and website would clarify that. They are: Ladybug, Cricket, Spider, and Cicada. I work with kids and keep these 5 for them in the waiing room..

I love Highlights and did especially did when I was a child. That would make a wonderful gift! :)

Highlights is usually targeted for the older kids like 7to 9 year olds. If you want to subscribe a magazine for your 5 year old niece i would try highlights High Five this is for preschoolers and kindergarten and also first grade. I think she would enjoy this one more because the stories are alot easier to read and there is alot of pictures as well. Good Luck

My mom subscribed me to Highlights as a kid when I lived in the US, and I learned alot of vocabulary on it, its a great source for a child, and at his age, he/she should have adult involvement on it., but its a great mag for kids., I also reccomend National Geographic for Kids.-

Yes, "Highlights" is a good magazine for kids
(wow! that was an easy 2 points!).

Other kid-friendly magazines may be found at the links, below, though I can't vouch for any of them. Keep in mind that some countries offer their own magazines which may not be known on the 'net. Your local library should be able to offer assistance.

Nickelodeon Jr is best.

Both of my sons received highlights last year for christmas; this was a year subscription. They would not read it; so I passed is off onto a couple of the neighbor girls who are around the same age as my sons (8-10) They enjoyed it; so I would say for a girl yes it is great, I enjoyed it as a kid; but if this is for a boy I do not know as my boys have absolutely no interest in this magazine.

its great

Yes! My parents let me have a one year subscription when I was in elementary school. There used to be a Sesame St. magazine too, but I am not sure if it's still published?

No, no, a thousand times no. I've hated Highlights my entire life. It's the only thing that would be mildly entertaining (but not very) in the doctor's office.

My suggestion is Click magazine, which is for ages 3-7. Winner of the 2007 Parents' Choice Gold Award.

I think the National Geographic kid's magazine is a fantastic idea too.

Yeah. (But, it'd be better if they can read because there's a lot of stories in that magazine, lots of pics too, but most of them go along with the stories. If she can't read very well or can't read at all then try Highlights: Hi-five, it's geared towards preschool and kidnergartion age kids.) In 1-3 grade, I had a subscription to Highlights. I loved it so much and I always had to check for it to come in the mail every day!!!! Now, I like Seventeen and Cosmogirl because I'm 14 now.

Highlights is for an older girl.
Try "Your Big Backyard".
It's a great magazine for 3-7 year olds that is put out by the National Wildlife Federation.
