Are the March and September Vogue issues the biggest/thickest issues of the year!

Question: Yes. As you might already know, March and September issues are veeeery important because it's the Spring Fashion Issue (March) & Fall Fashion Issue (September). These two issues summarizes all the key looks for the next six months (that would be one fashion season). This would mean there will be more editorials, fashion/beauty related articles and special features. Another reason is that most companies (mostly fashion houses & beauty brands) will advertise their clothes, accessories & other products (through ad campaigns) in the March & September issues because they know readership for those issues are exceptionally high & the period of time when these issues are on sale is the time when most fashionistas will start stocking up the hot items for next season. The fashion-conscious also regard March/September Vogue as the definitive & comprehensive guide of the trends of a particular season. That's why editors tend to put a lot of effort into these issues~~the covers would be exceptionally gorgeous, the editorials would also be exceptionally amazing (which would mean the best possible photogs, stylists, sittings editors, hairstylists, makeup artists, manicurists, set designers, photoshoot studio/location and of course models will be used) and there will be endless pages of ads (chalking up some 70% of the entire magazine's content) from almost every major fashion house in the world. So, basically the March and September Vogue issues are BIG & IMPORTANT!

This rule applies to all 17 Vogues around the world (but usually the American edition has the highest page count because of three factors: Anna Wintour, America and it has the highest readership). March & September issues of other fashion magazines also tend to be thicker because of the same reason, unless they decide to put a huge amount of editorial content into their anniversary/year-end/special issues. Magazines which have a substantial amount of fashion/beauty related ads (like Vanity Fair) in it also have thick March & September issues.

And also, one more thing-- the Fall Fashion Issue is almost ALWAYS thicker than the Spring Fashion Issue. This is because designers tend to have a larger collection for fall because people will need to wear more clothes because of the weather. Therefore, more pages will be needed to cover the must-have jackets/coats/gloves/hats for fall. The spring/summer season is not taken as seriously as fall/winter because you won't be wearing layers and layers of clothing and you will spend more time on how to keep your body in shape so that you will be able to fit into bikinis. Besides, now that resort/cruise/pre-fall collections are getting more and more important, the spring collections have started to become more and more neglected. That's probably why even Paris Vogue has combined its June & July issue!
