it depends. Truth in advertising means that what they are selling has to be real. For example, if they are selling Brand X Cereal, and they show a bowl of cereal, it better have Brand X Cereal in it. However, the milk might not be milk, it might be glue or something so that it looks perfect and won't spoil under the hold lights. They aren't selling the milk, so it's not a problem.

If the gold bars were just dressing for a photo of something else (like a gold necklace or something) then you can be pretty darn sure they're not real.

It depends. Sometimes using a fake thing look more real in a photo.

Maybe they were plastic bars painted gold. They can control the color and reflectiveness a lot better that way. Plus you don't have to worry about them being stolen from the shoot.

I know that with most food they use fakes. Real food often wilts or dries out (or melts with ice cream) under the hot lights, so plastic or wax is much better.
