You really have to look for one that has some resonance when you play the strings. Cheap ones sound crappy and you'll give up on guitar really fast if it doesn't produce a pleasing sound.

Brands: Martin, Yamaha, Taylor, Washburn.

You might also want to try Seagull guitars. They are made by
Godin which is a North-American manufacturer. They are sweet looking and sounding.

If you don't want to spend too much than skip the idea of buying your friend a guitar. Maybe buy him a gift card at the local music store or a VISA/MasterCard/Amex-branded gift card. That should get him started on his way to a new instrument.

A decent guitar will cost at least a few hundred dollars. Anything cheaper will not only sound cheaper but can frustrate a beginner. Cheap guitars usually 'buzz' or 'rattle' because of mass-production with little quality-control. Imagine trying to learn how to play the guitar when the only indication of your progress is coming from a cheap guitar resonating sub-par sounds. Learning a new instrument can be difficult enough without adding to it.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
