Hit the phone book! Most cities (and even some small towns) have local agencies that will put you in television commercials and print ads locally. From there, you can rack up some experience and a resume that can be sent to larger companies.
Also, local companies have a tendency to be a little nicer when it comes to telling you where your... needs for improvement may be. Janice Dickenson just comes out and says "hes a lard a**". A local company will phrase it more delicately, and thus be less detrimental to your self-esteem.
