It would help to know what aspect of women's magazines are you going to write about or is it all encompassing? Is it on the history of, content , influence etc. It's hard to give you an answer until I know.
Call it....Through the eyes of a woman
You'll need to find an angle, the size 0 debate is obviously pretty hot, and what about the appeal of some magazines to much younger girls, does it expose them to material they're really too young for? When I was in my early teens Cosmo was THE mag, it was where you learned about sex but in ways probably way above my actual understanding.
There have also been concerns about fashion for women being worn by very young girls, so you might want to consider are these mags positive or negative influences and what role do they really represent in our society today?
Finally you might want to think about how women from ethnic backgrounds are portrayed within some of the magazines and how positive/negative this is or how it might be viewed by males from the same or opposite backgrounds.

Those are a few thoughts which I hope might help. Good luck.

Kuta.
"How do women's magazines appeal to their target audiences?"

"How do women's magazines represent their audience?"

Meh... :/
