Question:

I used to really enjoy reading the 'Scandal Sheets', but now I think they're getting boring?

Answers:

As a social researcher, I find this interesting. Let me respond this way: Why is this the case? Here's some theories:

1. Could it be that the market has reached saturation? (A good deal of the stuff in the Scandal sheets has been actually appearing in the mainstream media -- take the fiasco involving Jon-Benet Ramsey.)

2. Could it be that the Scandal Sheets have been the subject of some abuse by celebrities? The fact that we now have moved beyond the A-listers onto D-, E-, and F-listers who are only famous because they get their mugs in the Scandal Rags (e.g., Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole Smith), could be leading to the boring effect.

3. Could it be that the Scandal Sheets are actually becoming too similar to each other? It was noted by one of my old profs in my undergrad years that when content reaches a certain level, media sources begin to resemble each other.

4. Could it be that the competition from alternate sources have actually become the death-knell for this media source? For the past ten years, the rise of the Internet (and blogs, etc.) have been predicted to be the end of print media. It is quite possible that the competing sources are robbing the Sun, the Examiner and so on of their luster?

5. One last issue: could it be that the media have become the issue too frequently? The paparazzi have become the story too often of late. It could be that the distaste of their conduct (e.g., the death of the former Princess of Wales) and the lack of ethics (e.g., the slugfests of the paparazzi with some celebs) have finally robbed the Scandal Rags of their interest.

You have raised an intriguing point -- I'll have to look into it further...
