Any advice on how to approach magazines for writing features?

I'm a Holistic Therapist and have written for a few local magazines so far - some advice on approaching national magazines would be great.

I think you need a good story, a good angle, something non standard as a peg on which to start, getting your profile raised as an "Expert" then moving on from writing press release type stuff which others use to your own output which others merely edit and for which you hopefully get paid.
I have had zero sucess in interesting magazines because there are just a few specialised railway modelling magasines out there and my field of "expertise" is a very small part of this field, but I am quite adept at getting myself and associates publicity, and I write village news for our local papers, which is paid, but unless you have something odd with mainstream appeal to get you noticed then you have little chance, which ever way you make the approach...
