i am doing a report on martha stewart and how she was shunned in todays society. are there any people who can explain more in detail, but so a 16 year old could understand, what she really did wrong...greatly appreciated...

I love her magazine and TV show. I think Martha Stewart is an astute businessperson and many people in our society don't like to see that in a woman. She doesn't get dolled up and smile for the media and she can hold her own in a male-dominated industry. I don't think what she did was that bad, and I work as a CPA for a publicly tranded company. Basically she sold a few thousand dollars worth of stock- pennies for her- on the advice of an investment professional. The advice was "inside" advice, meaning it was not known to the public at the time, and therefore it was illegal to trade on that advice. In her position she should have known (and did know) that she should not have sold, but should have just held the stock until the news was public and sold then. It would have meant a loss, but we can all see that would have been better in the long run. I think it was brilliant of Martha to go willingly to jail so that it would not interupt her business- at the time she had not finished appeals, and so could have waited to serve her time. She is still marvelously successful and entirely self made.
