Is the airbrushing in magazines harmful to your self esteem?!

Question:

Is the airbrushing in magazines harmful to your self esteem?

Ok, my whole outlook on this topic differs than most opinions because I compare it to the idealized art throughout history.
For instance, emperor Caesar was actually a short, fat, bald guy, yet in all of his statues he's portrayed as a tall, rugged & handsome figure with chiseled muscles & features.
Also, in all of the paintings and stuff, ya know, artists made the people look good. How different is that compared to what we do now in all of the magazines & ads.

Answers:

I think the difference is mainly the quantity. We are bombarded with these images in all directions and in all different kinds of media. The clothes that we try on in the store don't look good on us unless we're a size 0, the TV shows we watch portray "real" people who are incredibly thin and good looking, and in short - you can't turn anywhere without seeing these images.

So while you're right about people trying to manipulate their image throughout history, the quantity of these images in nothing to compare to what we have today.
