How do you get a job working for a magazine?!

Question:

How do you get a job working for a magazine?

I want to be a photographer someday, which I am going to school for, but I really want to shoot photos for magazines. How do I do this?

Answers:

Photographers usually start out as freelance. A lot of magazines only work with freelance photographers

A good way to build experience is to submit your photos to magazines that you think might print them.
(If you have a lot of cat pictures, send them to a cat magazine.
If your a nascar fan, a racing magazine would be a good market)

Send them with a cover letter explaining who you are and why you want to work with them (as opposed to another magazine)
You can include your resume too if you want. Also include a self addressed stamped envelope so they can return your samples.

Local magazines might be more willing to publish your pictures if you don't have previous professional experience. You may even try local newspapers. Having a lot of experience with a smaller publishing facility will look good to bigger companies.

Don't get discouraged by rejection letters. It doesn't mean that your work wasn't good, it just means they don't have a need for it at that particular time. Just keep trying.
