What are standard lead times for weekly magazines?

Why do some magazines that are ordered have lead times of up to 12 weeks? Are those lead times shorter if magazine is ordered directly from the publisher?

Once you've placed an order, it takes approximately one week for your subscription to be received and scheduled by the publisher. Your subscription is then added to the publisher's next production cycle and shipped via standard mail. For example, if your monthly subscription was ordered and received by the publisher in November, and the December issue has already shipped, your order may be added to the January mailing Our publishers ask that you allow 4 to 8 weeks (weekly magazines) and 6 to 12 weeks (monthly magazines) for delivery to start. Other less frequently published magazines may take longer to arrive. Rest assurred that we will check on the status of your order, and remember, your subscription starts when you receive your first unit--not when you place your orders. Basically, if you're willing to pay more for the magazine and get it a week or two quicker then buy directly from the publisher. Otherwise, you can buy magazines at discounts from sites like Magsonthenet - http://www.magsonthenet.com but you will need to wait a bit longer to get the subscription.
