Gather material: Jokes, editorials, essays, photos, crossword puzzle, poems, top 10 club hits, art work, whatever you want.
How many pages will the magazine be?
Draw a medium sized square representing each page and lay out where the text will go, the headings and sub headings, pictures, art, page number, advertisements, etc. Do that for every page. Once everything is laid out and flows nicely on paper, use your computer and software to make the pages, paste in text and photos and art. Be sure to save pictures in cmyk for printing.
Choose paper texture that works with your layout and demographic. Old people hate glossy pages. They prefer sheer and matte because there is less glare and the pages are easier to turn. You can print it out on home printer but unless you have top of the line one, I would have it printed at Kinko's or print shop.
You can fold and bind it yourself with a bigass stapler or let the print shop bind it.
