Hustler and others sell smut. Playboy sells an image. It's always been a joke that people "read Playboy for the articles", but on a purely porn standard, it's as tame as you can get. It's a few strokes of paint from being a Vogue cover or a wet bikini away from the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. But since it is viewed as somewhat "classy", they do attract prettier girls than hardcore. And they have many of the features that are being sold without nudity in magazines like Maxim or Stuff. It's the ultimate guy magazine. Articles on cars, cigars, wines, watches and electronics. Dirty jokes. Beautiful naked women presented in a socially accepted way...and the whole icon of Hugh Hefner. It's like any other big brand..it's more than the product. You're not just buying Playboy, you're buying the notion that there are many men in nice cars with beautiful women who do nothing but golf and make martinis.
