Do people in this USA read a lot?
No. I think most people in this country never read at all. Most get their news from "infotainment" trash like MTV. Or dumb "celebrities" ["idiots" more likely]. Or waste their time reading "romance" or some cheap mystery novels. What do you think?

Reading is a very slow way to transfer knowledge.
You can read a book in a day or watch a movie in two hours.
As for Articles they are quite often not as well edited as the television news. They are think pieces that only tell you what the other guy thinks, not you.
With the internet being what it is reading is now a practice of the technologically superior. It is quick and you can scan to the information you wish to learn instead of wasting time in the library looking for a book that may or may not be there.
All that said and done, there are still readers in this country but you are unlikely to hear from any of them on the internet because they are reading right now and they consider the internet just a step above television for what it gives them.
