is it possible to order back issues of a magazine even if i'm not a subscriber? (sorry if it's a stupid question!)

You absolutely do not need to be a subscriber to order a back issue.
Some magazine websites sell back issues - depends on which one you are looking for. Another way would be to call the subscriber services toll free number and order a single copy that way. If you will say which magazine you are looking for I can help you.
