How far in advance does a publisher put together the layout for a magazine befor!

Question:

How far in advance does a publisher put together the layout for a magazine before it is printed and shipped?

And how far in advance do writers write their stories. This question is more for a monthly magazine, but if you know the stats for bi-weekly and weekly...

Answers:

The actual layout is put together in stages according to close dates. So a July issue has one more week for stories to be written and edited (some of the stories for August are complete as well). The magazine will be laid out and printed in sections called forms. The inner forms are complete before the outer forms containing the cover and the table of contents.

On a weekly - depending on if it is a newsweekly (in which case the articles are written and published immediately) or more of a feature magazine like Time or Fortune where articles are written over time.

The July issue will be out around June 9 on the newsstands.
