or a court transcript on a case.

You probably won't be able to get a court transcript for free unless you know the exact court and case and are willing to go there personally. Even then, they aren't always available. And as far as the newspaper article is concerned, it depends on the case. If it's a high-profile case, maybe the local newspapers will have it, but there is usually a fee involved. If you're willing to go to the main library in San Jose, they should have a hardcopy of the newspaper(s) from the date you specified.
