Question:

In general, what percentage of a newspaper's/magazine's revenue is generated by advertising vs. subscriptions?

For example, Time magazine. They must have a huge revenue. I've always been curious whether a majority of a periodical's income is due to advertising or to actual sales of the magazine itself. Or is roughly 50-50? I know that without readership, a magazine cannot charge as much for advertising.

Answers:

The majority of revenue comes from advertising, about 90%.

But in order to get the advertising you need to show strong numbers of subscribers and long-term subscribers. So many times magazines will offer low cost deals and even free trial to get subscribers and bump up the numbers.
If their numbers fall too low they will not get the big companies to advertise and then there goes the big money. Advertising dollars is where the money is for most media companies like magazines, television, and radio.

Magazines start small but must get the readership to survive. Look at McCalls. It was bought out by Rosie O'Donnell. Rosie turned off the subscribers and it totally died in two years. There is no longer a McCalls or a Rosie Magazine. When she took over she changed the name to Rosie (bad call as McCalls was around since the 1950's. She made the magazine all about her and her life and she made many readers mad when she put them down for giving her advise on the magazine. A magazine is the READERS bottom line. Your magazine must reflect what the readers expect and want not what you as the owner want. She blew it big time and she failed. The advertisers pulled out as they did not want to be a part of the striff between the readers and Rosie. But without them, the magazine whet right down the tubes.
Your readers are your customers, a good magazine must listen.
