How does Playboy choose its Playmates?

Sometimes the woman herself or a friend or partner sends in photos that catch the eye of our editors. Others are discovered by Playboy photographers or photographers who specialize in glamour, swimsuit, fashion or similar styles. Test shots are done of those women who are likely candidates to become Playmates or appear in pictorials or Special Editions. Hef and the photography editors consider these shots, and from them Hef chooses the Playmates.

How many Playmate photos does Playboy own?

Millions. A Playboy photographer typically takes more than 1000 photographs during a shoot, but only a dozen or so are published in the magazine. The images, both published and unpublished, are then stored on 35mm slides in a climate-controlled photo archive. At last count, the archive contained just under 9 million photographs. Many of these unpublished images are being digitized and will be posted on the Playboy pay site.

Who is the "girl next door"?

Before Playboy debuted, most pin-up photography involved a small group of professional models who used a variety of names. Playboy departed from that tradition when it asked the magazine's subscription manager, Janet Pilgrim, to pose as the first "girl next door" in July 1955. The idea was that instead of being far-off glamour figures, the Playmates represented women that readers might meet at a party, or the grocery store, or at work. When more explicit magazines began to appear during the late Seventies, Esquire put Hef on its cover asking, "What have they done to the girl next door?"

How much are the Playmates paid to pose?

Playmates receive $25,000, and the Playmate of the Year earns an additional $100,000 and prizes such as a new car.

How can a woman apply to pose for Playboy?

Playmate and Special Editions applicants must be at least 18 years old and proof of age must be submitted with the photos. This should be in the form of photocopies of two pieces of identification. Only the following will be accepted: driver's license, passport, birth certificate, Social Security card or identification issued by state of residence. One ID must have a current photograph and list your date of birth.

The individual submitting the photos to Playboy, if other than the applicant, may be eligible to receive a finder's fee of $2500 upon publication of the feature.
