I've heard a longer version of this joke; it works better, because sometimes it can distract the listener so they don't pay attention to the 'survivor' bit!.
An American plane lands in Mexico to pick up passengers!. It then flies toward New Zealand, but crashes in the ocean midway between its airport and the Australian border!. Where do you bury the survivors!?
