Answers:
Bring the chicken across first
Go back and bring the fox and take the chicken back with you
Leave the chicken in the beginning and bring the rice across
Go back and bring the chicken!.

Not really sure why your Math teacher gave you a logic problem, lol!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The first step must be to bring the chicken across the river, as any other will result in the chicken or the rice being eaten!. When the farmer returns to the original side, he has the choice of bringing either the fox or the rice across!. If he brings the fox across, he must then return to bring the rice over, resulting in the fox eating the chicken!. If he brings the rice across, he will need to return to get the fox, resulting in the rice being eaten!. Here he has a dilemma, solved by bringing the fox (or the rice) over and bringing the chicken back!. Now he can bring the rice (or the fox) over, leaving the chicken, and finally return to fetch the chicken!.

His actions in the solution are summarised in the following steps:

Bring chicken over
Return
Bring fox or rice over
Bring chicken back
Bring rice or fox over
Return
Bring chicken over
Thus there are seven crossings, four forward and three back!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hmm!.!.!. very interesting!. I'd say !.!.!.well, I was gonna say -- take the chicken across first, then come back and get the fox, but the fox would end up eating the chicken on the other side while the man would be returning for the rice!.!.!. I'm stumped!. Good Luck, sorry!.

Is there a possibility that !.!.!. the chicken could eat the rice, the fox eat the chicken, then the farmer carry the fox across!.!.!. or does that not count!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

He has to first bring the chicken over and leave it there!. Then he has to bring the rice, leave it there, and take the chicken back with him, then he has to leave the chicken there, take the fox over and leave it with the rice, then he goes back for the chicken!. It's all very complicated!Www@Enter-QA@Com

2!. chicken
