The bellboy takes the $5!.00 up to their room, but on the way he thinks to himself that $5!.00 is tough to divide between 3 people, so, he pockets $2!.00 and refunds only $3!.00!.
So, the sailors only paid $9!.00 each for the room because they each got one dollar refund!.
3 x $9!.00 = $27!.00!. The bellboy kept $2!.00
