Is there a doctor in the house? Seriously...?!

Question: I've been smoking for 12 years, never more than half a pack and for the past 3 years, only 5-7 a day. Don't give me the lecture, but am I REALLY doing harm smoking so few???

The patches, gum and stuff haven't worked...any tried and true methods to quit from those who have succeeded? I sure enjoy those few, drat!

Well yes you are doing harm with every drag you loose lung compacity. Your body can compensate to a point. Do the tread mill thing and see how long it takes you to get out of breath and as soon as you start to get your breath you will want a smoke. The want to smoke reaction is your body confusing what is good for what is bad. The out of breath is loss of lung comacity. Gaining weight and being mad at the world actually what everybody is describing is the withdraw symptoms. Nicotine is a stereo isomer of N-1-methylnicotinamide. N-1-methylnicotinamide is a variant of some of the B vitamins that help your body feel good. Nicotine is the left hand version of the chemical. The body can not break it down but the nerves in the brain do not know that. It just sees the chemical it craves.
So in the beginning it is a slightly feel good, hyper, and slightly sensitive senses. This starts the cycle.
Your brain going nuts firing off different SNS nerves gives you the in a rush/hurry, increased blood pressure, you are mad at the crack in the floor and do not know why feelings. You crave the chemical, you know where it is at, and you try to stop because it is bad really bad for you. A complete body and mind battle within.
So I will say that it will be a daily battle. I quit once before went 14 years started again and now have quit again after 10 years. It has been two weeks. It is a day at a time battle. I went the cold Turkey method on purpose. The withdraw symptoms are Hell to deal with. The blood pressure, heart racing, headaches, the insane craveings, the edgyness, the racing wanting to do something, and the things that you get upset at on days 5 thru 9 are crazy when you look back. I wanted to know these things.. I needed to see how I was messing up my body and look back and see it. That keep me pluging forward one day at a time.

Good luck.

Some medical expert once stated that if you smoked more than one cigarette every three days, it was actually causing you some harm. It seems that is how long it takes the small hairs (cilia) in the air passages to spring back up and help the evacuation of crap from the lungs. Each ciggie makes these hairs lie flat.
5-7 a day is actually not a small amount and for the length of time you have smoked there is the possibility of permanent damage already happened. Damage that won't disappear when you quit.
Giving up cold turkey is the best way and although it's hard, it is not impossible.

It is tough....the best way is to stop buying them. Take it slow, you can do it. Don't let them control you. Cigarettes are poison, would you knowingly swallow a poison pill. The pill will kill you but only a little at a time...just like a cigarette, would you swallow on every 2 or 3 hours a day for the rest of your life? Of course not....The next time you want to smoke, say it out loud "this is poison", i don't want poison, because this poison is killing me".... It may sound stupid but it worked for me.....

Good Luck

I smoked for many years and had to try several times before I quit. I finally threw them in the trash and haven't touched one in about 25 years! It was tough but cold turkey is the only way to quit. Good luck! :)

...if you have not been able to quite using some conventional methods, then the addiction is strong and is doing you harm...I, too, smoke so I am in no place to lecture, but I quit once for 8 yrs and ended up getting re-hooked again...sad to say...I am also cutting down and only smoke about 6 cigarettes per day, but still recognize that I have a problem...I wish I could supply you with a good tried and true method, but I can not...I hope someone who answers can help us both...I just wanted to lend support in my own way...

Thank you, Evelyn

my s/o says 2 of his co-workers were able to quit with laser treatment. i think he said they laser your ear and both were able to quit after 1 treatment.

i smoke....but i'm, 23. so i'm invincible at this age and don't worry about it too much. ( i know all the risks and such and won't smoke forever) i saw a really great Oprah episode with Dr. Oz about smoking...i'll see if i can find it for you. it was very informative. i almost quit. kind of scary.

I'm in the same boat. I've smoked for way to long, since I'm 11 yrs old, now 53. I only smoke about 6-7 cigs a day and I've tried the patch and gum too. Not realizing they're nicotine to. I'd love to quit but don't know how either. Any amount smoked is to much, but we are addicts. Nicotine is a drug of sorts to.
