My son asked me this question the other day..any one have a logical explanation(!

Question: He asked me"Mama, if the thumb is not considered a finger, does that mean the big toe is not considered a toe?".
Any answers that are both anatomically and physiologically correct??

The reason for the different classification is two-fold... First, the thumb is different from the other fingers, as is the large toe, because they are actually physiologically different.

The thumb and large toe each has only TWO joints while all other fingers and toes have three joints (obviously excluding persons who are "double jointed").

The main difference between the thumb and the big toe is that the thumb's orientation is opposed in relation to the other fingers. While anatomically similar to the thumb, the lack of opposition in relation to the other toes leaves the big toe classified as simply another toe.

Try Wikipedia, that is the answer to everything.

The thumb is different because it is apposable. The big toe isn't.

The correct term for a the big toe is 'hallux major' and it is regarded as a toe.

FIngers, thumb, toes are all digits in our limbs.
They are all the same.

Tell him they are all digits and then you can explain to him why they aren't numbers.

The thumb is opposing to the rest of the hand it allows us to grasp that's what makes it unique. The big toe is just a toe it does nothing significant to make it unique.

me personally i understand the thumb not being a finger. but when someone's is talking about there big toe they would say "big toe" right.... i mean i do but not to get into that. and when someone says thumb they say my thumb not there"big finger" so i hoped this helped. and for better reference go to:www.soyouwanna.com

dear mom:
anatomically the thumb and the big toe differ from the rest because each has 2 bone (the proximal and distal phalynx) and the rest of the fingers has 3 bones(proximal middle and distal phalynx).but literaly they both are considered fingers

?

the big toe is not like the thumb. it doesn't stick out the side. it's a toe.

Tell him that the big toe is still a toe its just bigger to help us walk and the thumb is different to help us write.
