I was foreign student here in 1970. A family became my host and took me to their home on Christman holidays. I pronounced state of Carolina as Caroleena. The host said it is pronounced Carolyna. I said it has letters ''li'' so it should be prnounced like caroleena. He said no it is Carolyna. Then I said why do you pronoune University? You should pronounce this also Unyversytee- because it has letter ''si''.
He started looking at me with creases on his forehead.
I threw another word saying ''why do you pronounce word ''language'' like ''languaje'' - you should pronounce it like -lanjuaje- because there are two letters 'g' why pronounce one letter like 'g' and the other like '' j ''. Then he said '' you got me now''.
