Puzzle....I can't figure how it works.?!

Question: An email is going around, a wizardy kind of thing.
You think of a 2 digit number, add the two digits, then subtract this number from your original number. Then a screen shows like a 100 little designs...each one numbered from #1 on down. So then you look at the number you came up with & up comes that corresponding design (with a witches laugh). How the heck does it work???

i think it is because what ever 2 digit number when you add them and then subtract from original you always get a number that 9 goes into so they just have to put that design on the numbers that 9 goes into.

He is correct. If you look at the symbols, you'll see they always put the same ones on the 9, 18, 27, etc.

The design will be the same for a series of numbers. 89-17=72. 88-16=72. 17-8=9. All of the numbers with your design will be divisible by 9.

wow, confusing.
is it even possible?

Consider the first digit of your 2 digit number as 'x', and the second digit as 'y'.
Hence, your number is 10x+y (eg: 23 is your number, 2=x, 3=y)
Then, if you subtract the sum of your digits(x+y) from the number, you get 10x+y-(x+y)=10x+y-x-y=9x...that is 9 times the first digit of your number, which is obviously gonna be a multiple of 9. And if you observe carefully, all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol.
