I think it's a Frankenstein's monster made up of crudely sewn-together pieces of sayings: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Can't see the forest for the trees. If men could lick themselves like dogs we'd all be single.
"If trees had horses would be single"? I think you're missing something between 'horses' and 'would.' If it doesn't, I don't get what you mean.
Nope, never heard of it. Whoever came up with it must be grammatically incorrect or whatever, or either he had no idea what he was saying. I have no clue what it means!

I looked it up on the internet too and found pretty much the same answer as "wilson".
