Question: I would say that the scientific answer is definitely the egg.
The contemporary chicken had an ancient ancestor that was still genetically close enough to modern chickens that we can still call it a "chicken"... That's the first chicken, whichever one of these prehistoric chickens was born first, and it came from an egg... so the egg came first.
Sure, that egg came from another prehistoric bird, but not anything we could call a "chicken" since it would be unable to breed with a modern chicken.

The question refers to the debate over Evolution or Creation. If Creation is what happened, then God made the chicken first and it laid the egg. If evolution occurred, less advanced animals laid the eggs; over a period of time each successive generation would eventually make it to chicken.

Well, it depends on if you believe in creation or evolution. i believe in creation, and in that the chicken came first, but with evolution the egg might've come first. Not sure how exactly that works. So, what do you believe?

See, in the beginning, the chicken walked along the fence, then she squatted down and laid an egg.

If it fell on your side of the fence, then it's your egg, and you can make an omlete with it or boil it or keep it warm and hope for a chick.
