it says that he was going to town on monday..... it doesnt say that he necessarily did go to town on monday, just that he was planning to go to town on monday

He went to a different town in between, or took the long way home. Or his horse ran away and he had to walk home. Or the Indians abducted him for a couple of days then released him b/c he was a crazy white man. There are lots of reasons it took him a long time to get home!
