Is there a psychological difference between the sexes that would account for why!

Question: ...than their male counterparts.

do they sometimes sound harsh and strident because their humour is more personal ie consciously or deliberately cutting?

it seems female comedians are less able to do: ..zany...surreal...flights of fancy, stuff that isnt aimed at a personal level..but is more universal or panoramic.

i know cruelty and ridicule is a component of all comedy...but even accounting for that...it seems [to me] that male humour is somehow more inclusive and generous...whereas female humour is more catty and attacking - and so..grates on the ear more.

is any of what ive said valid...in your opinion, or am i talking bollocks and imagining it all?

There are far less female comedians than there are male comedians. I have often wondered why it is that females aren't really as funny as men (although there are some exceptions of course). I honestly can't put my finger on why this is but its an interesting question anyway.

?

I agree somewhat.. but it seems like more often than not there is just a sexist joke critic behind the whole thing.

as far as stand-up is concerned, they are 'funnier' than men..

Actually, I think some female comics are funnier.

BUT, that's not to say you're wrong.

Maybe men tend to find different things funny than women do?

Or maybe each relates to certain humour because it's something they know more about or it's part of their lives?

Cheers :-)

I don't know how you can say that, try watching Victoria Woods. For my money she is one of the best on the box today.

??????????????

and why.lol

According to Dom Reir et al, it is coz females r sexually neurotic, and given to sexually explicit material. They have obsessions with the human body and idiosyncracies. Victoria Wood is a prime example of a permanently neurotic female.

I think women and men find different things funny. I like comics like Steven Wright or Rita Rudner who make funny observations about life. I also think that women who make cruder jokes may not be as accepted yet as male comics due to still remaining beliefs that women should be more "ladylike". I disagree with your assessment that male humor is more inclusive and female is more catty - it just depends on who you listen to.

you've made a good point - it's not easy to talk about because people get too politically correct to discuss these things BUT I believe it's simply because women take things more seriously than men and so as a result are less funny as comedians.

I think it is that simple: women take things more seriously. Of course this is a gerneralisation but it does explain why there are fewer good women comics.

As for WHY women take things more seriously...? I'm not sure, but my friend (who is female) had a suggestion that it's because women have felt a need to 'prove' themselves in being as good at men at doing things (because they were always held back by men in the past), as a result of feeling they have a need to prove themselves they end up taking things too seriously.

If this is true then who knows, in a few decades we might see more female commedians as they learn to take life a little less seriously.
