the term started as a result of Africans (from Africa) being brought to America (USA) for use as slaves, i believe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. So these people are Americans with African ancestors.

African-Americans' ancestors were brought to America as slaves from America. Their families have now lived in the Americas for hundreds of years, but were originally african.
that is such ignorance....the term "African American" refers to an African who was born in the United states, and their parents or grandparents were born in Africa.
just like a person who parents were from Ireland and he was born in the united states is an "Irish-American"
