Windows troubleshooting?

ok my computer just says operating system not found and i just downloaded windows xp and burned it to a disk but it wont boot..is there any file that my download may have left out or something?? help is extremely appreciated

Answers: For the OS to suddenly be 'not found' means the boot record has become corrupted or your hard drive has or is failing. As far as not booting, well XP does boot from CD, you have to make sure it is set up to in "Set-up". To get to set up, press Delete and F2 alternately within the first few seconds after turning the computer on, this will take you into setup. From here look for "boot sequence" and be sure 1.44 floppy is first, CD-ROM is second, and Hard Disk 0 or 1 is third. It may actually use the Make and Model to decribe your HD. Disable boot from LAN unless you are networked for it.

I recommend you use a boot floppy or CD from Win98 or Me. Run FDISK and remove all partitians, and then create and activate at least one partitian (Primary), restart the computer and type 'Format c:". This will ensure a clean installation. If the XP CD does successfully boot, it will ask before installation if you want to convert from FAT32 to NTFS file format -- I recommend you do.

To have downloaded XP you may have broken the law and shouldn't have posted this question accross the net, but oh well too late now. It's likely that you would have downloaded it from a site like Warez, which is somewhat notorious for having corrupted or missing information in their commercial software sections. Another strong posibility is that you didn't extract the information correctly when you burnt to CD, if such is the case you will never get it to boot. Check the instructions for un-packing it and setting it up as a boot CD, if none then you may just have to buy it or check around with friends and neighbors to see if they have a copy, but don't use their product key. BTW, you will need a product key to activate XP, if you have found one on the net (which I kinda doubt was easy) you can never get updates from MS, cause the OS will tell on itself and if that key is already in use, your system will be corrupted or crash altogether.... You need to have a boot disk, or have Windows XP boot disk, try to see if you can download it.
Go to www.bootdisk.com and get it there.
Hope this helps! um wut does that have 2 do wit jokes just wonderin Hope this helps!
