my mum made me go to methodist sunday school i think i heard it there. Pleased to say that I can remember this story with a slight variation. I was told that all the dogs went to a great ball and on entering had to hang up their rear ends. Unfortunately there was a fire and all the dogs rushed out grabbing any rear end in escaping and that's why they sniff looking for their own.
