Question:

This event took place in my life, I have 30 others like it, should I write a book or create a website?

May 1983.

The Old Woman

I sat in my bed Indian style staring across the room a little bit confused. I stared blankly at the person sitting in the rocking chair staring back at me. Who was this old lady? I thought to myself.

The old woman was wearing a dark red dress with yellow flowers that hung just above her ankles while she was sitting. The dress had a white collar that reminded me of a doily rather than a collar. On her feet were thick black shoes that squared off at the toe. I could see white socks or nylons on the small portion of her legs that was showing. Her face was wrinkled and the only distinguishable feature was the round spectacles she wore. Her hair was more silver than a gray, and she wore it in a tight bun.

After what seemed like ten minutes of staring at each other she finally moved. The old woman leaned forward towards my toy chest and removed several “action figures” and large metal Tonka Truck. She placed the toys on the floor, and leaned back in the chair and we began the stating contest again. I finally decided to speak to the old woman in the rocking chair. I said, “Hey, I just put those away. I’m gonna get in trouble.”

The old woman looked at me with a puzzled expression and moved towards the toy box again. This time the old woman removed a toy semi truck, and trailer that said “ROADWAY” on it. She placed the toy on the ground next to the other toys. The old woman sat back in the rocking chair and again the staring contest began.

I told the woman, “I just cleaned my room, quit playing with my toys.” The old woman smiled at me and leaned forward in the rocking chair. She began to push the semi around the floor as if she was driving it. Aggravated with her I yelled, “Quit playing my toys!” She would not comply.

I yelled at her to stop five or six times. The last time I yelled my bedroom door burst open and in came my mother. My mother ran over to me, ignoring the old woman sitting the rocking chair. She stood next to the bed and asked, “Why are you yelling?” I pointed to the rocking chair and said, “She won’t stop playing with my toys!” As I pointed at her, the old woman stood and began to walk towards my open bedroom door. My mother turned and looked at the rocking chair. The rocking chair was still rocking but my mother could not see anyone in the chair. She said, “Who is playing with your toys?” I pointed at the old woman walking out of my bedroom and yelled, “She is!” My mother scolded me for playing a “cruel joke” on her.
