Question:

I tuned my guitar strings on my les paul and they are tuned but the big e string sounds muffled?

Answers:

It is more likely that your bridge just needs to be adjusted. On many Les Pauls (mine included) there is the ability to raise and lower the bridge, by turning one of the two ribbed washers on either side. Take a look at the bridge down by the low E string and if yours has the ability, try turning the little round thing you find there until the strings raise up. I think that is the most likely problem and also the easiest to solve.

To check if your guitar neck is bowed, stand it straight up on the ground while sitting, put it between your legs and look straight down the neck from above the headstock. Move it slightly around and take a look at the neck in relation to the strings themselves. You know the strings are straight because they are just a stretched wire, so when you compare them to the neck you can see how things are shaping up.

It is also possible that you need a new nut. If you don't know, that is the little bar across the top of the neck that the strings thread through before going to the tuning pegs. You could also take a look at the E string where it meets the nut to see if that has been worn away or damaged.

Hope this helps, good luck my friend.
