Is this a subtle way of saying your mother died?!

Question:

Is this a subtle way of saying your mother died?

An army general received word that the mother of private Philpott had died. At parade, the sergeant major volunteered to break the sad news
'I’ll go and tell him, shall I, sir?'
'Steady on, sergeant major,’ said the general. ‘You can just barge in and tell the poor man that his mother died, in front of the rest of the regiment. This calls for tact and diplomacy. Subtlety.'
'Very well, sir' said the sergeant major. ‘I shall be at most diplomatic and subtle.'
With that, he marched over to the line of soldiers and bellowed the command: ‘all those with mothers still alive, one pace forward...not so fast, Philpott!'
