Who is smarter girls or boys?

Who is smarter? Boys or girls? This question does not come up in most conversations. It is, however, most commonly discussed by young teens and children evrywhere. Children make more comments about this topic, than adults, because they feel their athletic and/ or intellectual ability is greater than the opposite sex. This forms a most popular argument nearly everyone has heard in their younger years, "Girls are better than boys!" or vice versa.

Before, when women were looked down upon, it was said that men were the greater species or more commonly referred to as "the man of the house". Women believed they were just as smart as any man. Then scientists became aware of the differences in men and women activity, so they felt research had to be done on this subject. It all begins with the birth of a baby girl and a baby boy...

Scientist Michael Lewis did an experiment, with one-year old boys and girls, to see their reactions when they are separated from their mothers. He had put up a barrier so that the child could see the mother, but was prevented from reaching her. When the boys were tested, most of them tried to knock down the barrier. On the other hand, during the girl testing, most of them sat there and cried. This finding is consistent with the view of greater aggression in men than in women.

Do you know men have bigger bodies than women? Most likely you do. Since this is a fact, (in most cases, considering there are men out there shorter than the average women) you probably knew their heads are also larger. Their heads being larger doesn't mean their brains are though. Men have more fluid in their heads. This may, and does, sound weird, but this is a specific kind of fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebrospinal fluid is the liquid in which the brain floats inside the head. Having more or less fluid in your head does not affect your brain.

Females tend to be higher than males in empathy, verbal skills, social skills and security-seeking, among other things. While men tend to be higher in independence, dominance, spatial and mathematical skills, rank-related aggression, and other characteristics. Scientists have discovered, this is because, there is a difference in the sizes of a region in the cortex of men and women called inferior-parietal lobule or IPL. (This area is located just above the level of the ears.)

Furthermore, the left side IPL is larger in men than the right side. In women, this is reversed, their right side IPL is larger. So, it seems that IPL's size correlates highly with mathematical abilities. The brain of Albert Einstein, as well as other male physicists and mathematicians, proved this to be true.

This next test has nothing to do with mathematical or social skills. In fact, this test is all about memory...

At York University in Canada, male and female students were left alone in a room to await a study, or so they thought. Actually, waiting in the room was the study, for when they sat down with the experimenter in another room (afterwards) the students were asked to recall what was in the room.

The exact words of a female's response:

"On the right-hand side of the desk, right here, was a briefcase with your initials at the top. There was a tube with mitts and an "I am 40" button on it. In the middle there were envelopes, York University Envelopes. There was a thing of Clearisil and a Bazooka joke comic."

This was only part of her response, but it was all not shown on the television program. Stossel, the scientist who tested her, said "We could have let her go on much longer."

The exact words of a male's response:

"I remember Pound Puppies. It was like, right here. I don't have a very good memory, I don't."


And there you have it. The women remembered the room while the men tended not to remember. (These two responses were not the only one's made.) Since these subjects were not told they would be quizzed on what was in the room, the memory may have something to do with recalling incidental things, or perhaps it is just general memory ability. In any case, the women far outpaced the men.
