The carbuncle dosn't say anything in return, instead it starts to tarnish like old lead.
A candle stick on the other side of the mantle shelf calls over and says "Oi, carbuncle! your not allowed to become tarnished on the mantle piece next to the likes of this here carrage clock and such waxy candle sticks like myself. If you want to be come an anomally, then your going to have to sit in the hearth or in the coal bunker."
At this, the carbunkle stops mid way through his tarnishing impression and says, "if your going to be like that then I'm going back home."
The carrage clock almost stops for an instant and enquires " wheres that then?"
The carbunkle hautily retaughts " On madams toe, actually, I used to be a veruca!"
