Question: Does Mars conjunct Ascendant function similarly to a Mars in 1st!?

It can, but I find it depends on the sign(s) involved and a few other aspects or what other planets are in the first!.
The exception I have seen with this is that it's emphasis is not as much or not at all on putting a lot of energy into "how people see you" as you can find with Mars in the first!. The strong and/or high energy and tendency for accidents, scars to the head or headaches is still involved though, in addition to resilience!.
Added later - If it is coming from the 12th house!.!.!.you will also find the person has incredible reserves that give them the ability to pull themselves out of situations in times of low energy or when other's would be expected to give up and throw in the towel!. These reserves are usually very hidden, old and with wisdom, as they come from the Karmic Dust Bin of the chart (12th)Www@Enter-QA@Com
