Understanding the skeptic VII: Compatibility and statistics?!

Question: Understanding the skeptic VII: Compatibility and statistics!?
From Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy:

"!.!.!.a psychologist from Michigan State University, Bernard Silverman, looked at 2,978 married couples and 478 couples who divorced!. He found absolutely no correlation between which couples divorced, and which couples were born under alleged "incompatible" signs!.""

Based on just this information (all that Mr!. Plait provided, alas), what astrological explanation could account for the results of this "amazing" study!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
oh ah ah i can point out what could be wrong with this study

First of all, this is biased in many way , the psychologist could have been biased in picking out the couples just to prove that astrology is wrong

Mr!. Plait is a skeptic, so in his mind, he would presume that astrology is unreal and therefore, actively seek out studies that have proven astrology to be wrong!.

And 3rdly, any astrologer or even those who are studying astrology would know that sun sign compatibility alone will NOT tell anything about a couple's marriage!. There are almost a hundred of factors that should be counted in ( synastry )!.!.!.!.and he completely forgot the fact that Astrology does not control people free will !. Although I dont think he forgot that fact, he just chose to ignore it for his own convenience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I pretty much agree with everything Ryan said!.

It seems as though the silly psychologist decided that birth charts aren't important, that he just based his waste of time study off of Sun signs which shows very little about relationships!.

But that's besides the point anyway because astrology has never claimed to be able to predict how long a couple will stay together!. It doesn't say that two signs can't be together, it just says that they are different and will probably have a hard time understanding each other!. Astrology also recognizes that enviroment, upbringing, and culture have a lot to do with personality, relationships, etc!. and the quality, length, and type of relationship is based on the free will of the person to love whoever they want!.

It bugs me that skeptics are always trying to do studies that prove astrology WRONG instead of proving that it works!. It's easy to set something up to fail!.

Great question, I like all your skeptic questions!Www@Enter-QA@Com

That proves to me that Mr!. Plait doesn't know squat about astrology!. Sun sign alone doesn't show anything!. That's like the TV show that took 12 people and a number of astrologers and asked the astrologer to guess the Sun sign!. All were wrong!. Well that's because no one told the audience what the rising signs were, that's our public face!.

Based on his flawed "experiments" I would say he's not a good scientist!. One can make stats to prove anything if the basis of the stats was flawed!. I wonder how his science experiments are skewed!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I fear I must say that ,unless he took into account more than just the Sun signs and their"compatibility",his study is not reallly valid!.In astrology, compatibility has to do with the entire chart!.Not just Sun signs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Mr!. Plait must be a drop out Dee!. The reason he found no correlation is simple!.!.!. He was studying aliens and got his notes wrong!.!.!.!. stupid @ss !!!

I think we would get better results with Dr!. Phil or Opray for pete's sake!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Look at the suns and moons etc, that may tell you a different story!. Did he try numerology!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Simple put: he knows nothing about astrology!. How in the world would he know what to look for!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Did he do the whole charts!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

!.!.!. no astrological account; simply the fact that he fell into temptation of pop astrology and simply checked the SUN signs of those people, as the quote clearly states by saying " "incompatible" *signs*", instead of charts!.

It simply clearly shows how little he knows about the actual study of astrology and how much he is lead by his own prejudice against it!.

I once took part in a similar experiment, where they used a personality test (derived from the tests Jung created, no less! How is that for irony!?) and did not even ask for entire birth data; only the day and month of birth so they could find out your sun sign!.

With someone like me there's no wonder they would come to the conclusion that I don't act like a Scorpio at all! *rolls eyes* !.!.!. I sent them an e-mail then, asking them exactly what they hoped to achieve with the experiment and explained to them in short that what they thought was astrology, wasn't astrology at all and described simply the basics!.

3 years later, I'm still waiting for their response!. o_OWww@Enter-QA@Com
