The masculine and feminine signs correspond to the concepts of yang/yin in Chinese astrology. Aries is the 'yang-yang' while Pisces is the 'yin-yin', meaning they are both the most masculine and most feminine of the signs respectively.
Masculine signs are outer-directed. They need others to feed off that energy exerted from themselves. Which is why they are often portrayed as being the active, extroverted signs of the zodiac. Without that energy to bounce off from someone else, they feel unhappy and unacknowledged. Masculine signs always look actively for someone to interact, exchange energies with or complete their lives. These signs do well in the social realm as communication and interaction are right up their alley.
Feminine signs on the other hand are inner-directed. Their energies turn inward towards the Self instead. That's why they are often labelled passive and introverted. Instead of turning outwards and feeding energy from others, they are more prone to self-reflecting and introspection. They need a lot of time alone to recharge internally and don't do well with too much social interaction or being in large groups on a regular basis.
Male signs (fire and air) are extroverted for the most part, more outgoing and tend to take their destiny at hand more or less. They invite themself to a party without an invitation.
Female signs (earth and water) are more introverted, emotional and sensitive and tend to follow in the footsteps of what was already started. This type will wait for an invitation.

Anyway to the question. The planets function opposite. Murcury in gemini makes the gemini very open minded, full of ideas, flexible, and wants to learn a little about everything. Virgo are opposite. Saturn in capricorn wants to succeed and get ot the very top. Saturn in aquarius makes him fight for causes. The differences is one is bound by rules one fights against them. Either way the Similarity is that they both have strong determinations to succeed.
Mars in aries likes more freedom and fiery success challanging the quota. Mars in scorpio like to be the boss of everyone. Similarity= power of oneself or others.
But some signs are exceptions. Those with powerful energies that only those planets/stars can express themselves in. They are cancer ruled by moon. Cancer are the most emotional. Leo ruled by Sun they are the most fiery. Not only because of that ruler. But also Leos have the greatest pride, just less impulsiveness as aries and less optimism as sagittarius. They are the entertainers of the zodiac. They like to shine bright in front of everyone, just like the sun. And finally Uranus in aquarius. Aquarius the only one having any and all of those qualities from uranus and to such an extent. Only one sign can handle such powerful energies as uranus.
