You can find your totem spirit by meditation. I would sit outside in order to gain access to nature and the animals that roam around outside. While meditating the animal could show itself in a large group, or even approach you. It is also possible to see a vision of your totem spirit, but that would probably involve series of prolonged sessions of meditation.
For instance say you're meditating in an area where there are no wolves, but a dog approaches you. This could be that you're spirit is a dog, but if you focus in on that animal or subject for a prolonged time you may find it to be a wolf or some other type of wild dog.
And try to decipher signs you may see with plenty of support for what it means, because if you don't you may find yourself confused to what your power animal may be. Say that you've just meditated and then you go for a walk. A cat starts following you, this could be a sign or a stray cat, but if it keeps occurring you could say that your animal is a cat. You may even run into an unusual large group of birds, after meditation. Just stay open to the possibilities, but don't go overboard and drive yourself nuts with signs.
Some people may use their zodiac for their power animal (Leo- Lion, Cancer-Crab, etc). Your animal can also change as you change. I would just stay humble to the nature around me and meditate.
Each animal has a different meaning (different qualities), I'm not sure what all of them are, but you can more than likely find them with a simple "totem animals" google search. People aslo have differing opinions on what each animal means. You might even have an overwhelming emotional sense when you meet your totem animal, which may describe what that animal means for you.
