It sounds kinda complicated, but it's not that bad.

At the exact time of your birth, the planets and stars in our solar system were at a specific place. These planets, in relation to what constellation they are moving through at that specific time, are what make up your Natal chart.

(The following was taken from an almost identical question I answered earlier today...)

The planets travel in specific orbits through our solar system and come in contact with the Earth at specified times. The theory goes, that at each moment in time, these planets/stars will apply their influence on a person in a certain way.

Over the thousands of years that astrology has been in use, these influences have been recorded and interpreted.

So, each of the planets has a specific role to play in a person's life:

The Sun is like the coach of the team.
The Moon handles the past, emotions, and intuition.
Venus handles what a person loves, is attracted to...
Mercury handles how a person communicates, writes, thinks and talks.
Mars handles how a person expresses energy.
Jupitier handles a person's growth and good luck.
Saturn handles a person's life lessons, struggles, and bad luck..

And so on..there are more.

These are simplistic, but you get the idea. And, there are, of course, other planets and asteroids that people have placed meanings upon also, but these are the main one.

Each planet lives in or rules it's "house"...it's comfortable place...and these houses are assigned in a specific order in your chart, based on the time, location, place, and date of your birth..these houses are numbered 1 through 12 and each represents another different part of your character, personality, etc.

The Rising Sign (not sun) is the 1st house, and is also called your Ascendant. It is considered one of the most important placements in your chart, so is discussed here considerably.

The 7th house is the opposite of the Ascendant, and represents partnerships and often marriages...

The term "cusp" represents a sensitive place in some charts where one house transfers it's characteristics to it's neighboring house.

From a combination of the house and the locations of each of the planets, in relation to each other's locations, too, an astrologer can interpret characteristics of a person, and other such whimsy. How the planets connect by degrees are called aspects.

Sorry this is so long, but that's a big question you asked!
Blessings to you.

I wish I could help you with all the terms but I only know about cusp. I believe your sign is a cusp sign when it is on the turning point of a sign. An example is like your born a day after Sagittarius ends, so your a Capricorn. You may have traits like both a Capricorn and Sagittarius. www.dictionary.com may help with these terms.

Rising sign is determined by your time and place of birth. It reveals how you show yourself to the world and how they view you.
The 7th cusp reveals your marriage partner and married life. This house also shows your attitude toward other persons on a permanent basis and their attitude toward dealing with peers.
Briefly, this is also how you see others in your own eyes.

Your sun sign is your potential and how it is expressed, is modified by your rising sign and the sign that contains the Moon.
Mercury position reveals your intellect and where it is expressed best.
Venus indicates your feelings and what type of a woman you would prefer to have or that are attracted to you.
Mars is your energy and the house reveals where you will exert the most effort.
Jupiter is the luck planet and where it is placed reveals the area where you will /would be most lucky.
Saturn is the planet that teaches lessons and its osition tells you the area where you need to learn your lesson. It restrict and obstructs the things signified by its house placement.
Uranus is freedom and its placement, reveals where you tend to be more free and where you tend to be most creative.
Neptune is the planet of illusion, intuition, deceit and the house placement indicates where you would be intuitive, where you meet deceit etc..
Pluto by itself destroys and transforms. The house placement indicates where he destroys, kills, but gives rebirth to start over again.

you should go here and get all that stuff done up for ya, so you are "in the loop". :-)
