I want to learn Tarot? How do I pick a deck?!

Question: Someone told me once that a lucky deck is the one that you receive as a gift. I don't think that any of my friends would ever give me one by themselves. would it be ok for me to ask someone to give me a present like that? Would the cards have the same effect as the ones that are a gift?
Does it matter where you buy the cards? Is it your energy that drives them to give you an answer or is it something else?
I have gotten a reading before and it was scary accurate. I also tried to do online readings but i always get very negative results to all of my questions, so i gave up on it.
Please tell me what do I need to know prior to getting my own deck of cards.

Thank you :)

I am not quite sure where all of the "it will only work if it was a gift) came from, but I assure you that picking out a deck that you like will work just fine. A few important points about a deck that you are going to use are that you like the images, that they speak to you in some way, that it has a GOOD book to go with it and that it is set up in a logical pattern and not just pretty pictures. While there literally are hundreds of decks out there I started on the Rider Waite. It is the original deck that most people used for first half of the last century.

The cards are a road map to the universe. The Rider Waite and some of the other decks are set up along the Tree of Life. This means that in many ways the cards are no more mystical than a map of Cleveland. It is just a tool, nothing more nothing less. It is your ability to read the map of the universe that drives them. So if you can read a map you are in good shape :)

I read from the Thoth deck and it has incredibly vivid images. It is set up in a logical pattern and the cards mean something in relation to their point on the map. I am very fond of a book by Lon Milo Duquette that lays it all out in really plain English. It is called Understanding the Thoth tarot and it is great. Regardless of what deck you use I also highly recommend Mary Greer's Tarot for Yourself. It is a great book and it deals with the challenges of getting you out of the way of the cards when you read for yourself.

Good luck and enjoy!

dont do this u will go to hell..no offense ok :)

Don't get a gift of cards...the energy of the person who bought them could be tranferred. Instead, the best way to buy a pack of cards is to find the deck that suits your personality best (some theme that you love), then take them out of the box and discard the box. Place them on a colored cloth that suits you, circle them with sea salt and place in an area where the sun and moon can shine on them for 24 hours. That'll clean away any influences on the cards by other folks.

You can buy the cards wherever you want...just make sure to give them the above cleaning before using. However, no...a gift deck will not get thoroughly cleansed...you'll have memories of that person forever embedded in the deck.

Good luck!

Tell your friends hints that you want to learn Tarot but maybe some tiny hints of the problem why you cant buy them yourself..........
maybe they'll give a deck to you eventually :)
