He's not dead, but a really old man now, with a harumph about how nobody has bothered to give him any more attention. And his sick secrets about the leftover dead people, which is disgusting for me to even visualize.
The crosshair signature is the symbol of the halo around Christ, which is also an astrological symbol. He could be saying that he believes he is like god. To describe it all is too much for this one answer.
It sounds like a game, devoting time to an old man's murdering letters, but really, work on something that pays money. Working on an old man's games is sort of fruitless in the end.

-Although the Zodiac claimed in letters to newspapers that he murdered as many as 37 people, investigators agree on only seven confirmed victims, two of whom survived so this person would have to be a little cocky because he wanted people to believe he or she killed all those people or he or she was i guess..considerate because he or she didnt want to brag about it.
-Why did he choose Zodiac, he had sent his second letter finally reffering to himself as the Zodiac. So maybe that was the name of a place where he liked to go or maybe it was a nickname.
