Question: I asked a question about the typical characteristics of a taurus and someone told me i needed to look into my birth chart. So can someone explain to me what this is?

Sure can.

A birth chart is to a person as a blueprint is to building. It maps out the person's life and tells of an individual's good and bad qualities. It is not fate; a birth chart does not say what will or will not happen, but instead what will happen if you do not try to change anything. But if there's anything astrology teaches it's that we have choices. We can find our good qualities and our bad qualities, then we choose which ones to keep and which ones to ignore.

Within a birth chart, there are 12 houses. These houses go from 1 to 12 in a counterclockwise motion. So, you would start at your 1st house, which is also called the "ascendant" or "rising sign." It rules the first house. The way to "look" at it is this: imagine that your birth chart is a clock. It has 12 lines just like a clock has 12 numbers. Each number on a clock represents a specific time just as each line on the chart represents a house. So, when you look at the chart, you will see 2 bold lines. 1 is going up and down, the other is going across. The horizontal line represents the ascendant and the descendant. The vertical line represents the midheaven and the imum coeli. We'll just call the midheaven the "MC" and the imum coeli the "IC".

Now, the ascendant (ASC) is intersected by the meridian, the axis that connects the MC and the IC. The space left of the meridian is east; the space to the right is west. These directions are the opposite of what they usually are because we live in the northern hemisphere, on top of the planet so to speak.

You will notice that on your chart, there are "pie shapes", or at least they look as if the chart is a pie, and someone has cut 12 slices. The numbers inside each of the "pie shapes" stand for the numbers of the houses. They are labeled as so: there is a 1 inside the "pie piece" called the first house. There is a 2 marking the 2nd house, a 3 marking the 3rd house, a 4 marking the 4th house, and so on and so forth for all 12 houses. So, now that you know which house is which, let's direct our vision from the inside of the house, where the numbers are found, to the outside of the house. Here we see the signs ruling the houses. Each sign is represented by a symbol. Here are the symbols:

Aries: Looks like a V with hooks on the ends: the color of this symbol is red
Taurus: Looks like a bull head with horns; a circle with an arc above it: the color of this symbol is green
Gemini: Looks like a wider version of the roman numeral for 2: the color of this symbol is orange
Cancer: Looks like 2 circles with arcs coming out of each one; almost seems to form the number "69": the color of this symbol is blue
Leo: Looks a bit like a wide horseshoe with hook-like projections to the left and the right; almost like an upside down U: the color of this symbol is red
Virgo: Looks like a capital M in cursive with an arc stemming from the side and curving downward; this arc crosses pathes with the last line of the M: the color of this symbol is green
Libra: Looks like a wide horseshoe with a line below it: the color of this symbol is orange
Scorpio: Similiar to virgo, only instead there is an arrow stemming from the bottom of the M. There is no arc like with virgo: the color of this symbol is blue
Sagittarius: Basically just an arrow with a horizontal line running through it: the color of this symbol is red
Capricorn: A bit hard to explain: Looks like a small circle with a weird V-shape above it: the color of this symbol is green
Aquarius: Looks like 2 squiggly lines, 1 on top of the other: the color of this symbol is orange
Pisces: Looks like a horizontal line with 2 half circles, one on each end: the color of this symbol is blue

In your case, you are a capricorn rising. So, capricorn ( the circle with a weird v-shape) rules the first house. And we see, if we look, that this funny circle v-shape thingy is over the ascendant. If we look at the bold horizontal line and we follow it to the left until we come to it's end, we will see that it ends within capricorn's "boundaries". Capricorn "rules" this line to the left. Then, when we go and look at this same line, but instead follow it to the right until it ends, we see that Cancer is "ruling" or "containing" the line. The line ends at the space that Cancer takes up. Each house is this way. Each one of the 12 lines, when followed to it's end, ends at a space ruled by a sign.

Hope this helps! And feel free to email me if you need some extra help. Don't let anyone fool you; this stuff is confusing and hard at first, so if there is something you don't get, just let me know. I'll do my best to explain it.
