Why the change in birthstones?!

Question: I had always seen one birthstone listed for each birth month. Now I see several given. Why the change? Or has this always been the case and I didn't realize it?

Al the other answers you have are right in part. Its been decades and decades that different stones were associated with different birth months. By the same token, it varies from religion and country. My native American stone is jasper, where-as my zodiac stone is aquamarine and someone told me my Chinese stone was opal. To my understanding Wiccans have their own log of what stones goes with who. Just look it up, or go with your favorite.

Marketing: greater variety = higher gross income for jewelry dealers.

Where did you see this? I didn't know anything about this, I know there is 2 different items listed for anniversaries, a modern one and a traditional one.

Different sources, have their own list of what the birthstones are, its been going on for years.

Its been going on for years, you probably didn't realize it.
Also each sign starts in the previous month. So for instants April birth stone is Diamond, so people tend to say Aries birthstone is a Diamond, but Aries starts in March. So that may be where some of the confusion lays.
