Whats the purpose of a soul mate?!

A soul mate is here to assist us in learning the lessons that we need to learn in this lifetime in order to fulfill our karmic obligations and rewards. As far as why goes, it's because we're all here to learn. If we didn't need to learn, we wouldn't need to be here, we'd be off experiencing eternal bliss somewhere:) How depends upon the circumstances, really.
EDIT: Reading the other responses, I think that it's the general assumption here that a soul mate is exclusively someone that you'd have a romantic relationship with. "The One" so to speak, and that really isn't the case, IMO. A soul mate is someone who assists you along your path...it could be anyone, any kind of relationship. And they don't all last forever, either. In fact, the ones that tend to initiate the most growth and change are the ones that don't stick around for very long, or at least that's been my experience. It can be a family member, a teacher, a friend, a mentor or a lover. Anyone who affects and changes you and helps you to evolve at the soul level, really.
To be a someone to share our lives with and to witness every small and insignificant thing we do.
I've had 2 "soul mates" and both of them screwed me over
